Rare, antique, and vintage books

Many people love to read and collect rare books.

It’s important to realize that this type of book presents many difficulties in the marketplace. For one thing, old books are often in bad shape. There may be very few readers who want the book, and there may be newer and cheaper editions of the same book that are more practical for daily use.

That being said, there are many old books that are extremely valuable for their content or historical significance. This type of book is sought by museums, countries, researchers, and high-end collectors. There may be only one, or just a few originals left, so the price can be astronomical.

If you have some old books you would like to sell try a local dealer in collectible books. Many local dealers have access to other sellers and collectors who may desire what you have. Then try online. Be careful to research what you actually have. Plenty of people have sold things not realizing their true value. On the other hand, don’t get inflated ideas either. Be realistic, because old books have few buyers.

Electronic books… get used to them…

Okay folks, we all love the physical books but face it, for many people electronic books make sense for a variety of reasons.

- Price – it’s not as great an advantage as we’d like, because publishers are charging a pretty penny for their “bits and bytes”. In fact, they are raking it in bigtime because there’s no inventory to stock. Click…you bought it. What you get, really, are rights of usage.

- Weight… face it, this is HUGE. If you travel AND read, it’s a no-brainer. Take along your ipad or kindle, and off you go.

- No “waste” books, over runs, remainders, old editions to scrap, etc. On the face of it, seems nice for the environment, but don’t forget the costs of making all those gadgets that get thrown away when the new model comes out. Old books can be burned for fuel as a last resort.

Recycle books

There are a great many good used books out there that Fat Brain Books will buy. Go to the main site www.fatbrain.co.uk to see if they’ll buy the ones you find. If not, you can try a local library, or you can give some of them to interested friends.

Now, if you still can’t find a home for the books you find, you have some further options. They can be used as fuel in your fireplace or woodstove ! Or, just put them with the other paper recycled stuff and let the local trash pickup send them to be ground up into more paper.

But, before you give up and throw old books away, give some thought to their value, look through them, see if there might be some you can read or give to others.
